“Bad Vibes” Are No Joke

“Bad Vibes” Are No Joke

It was the interview heard around the world. When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sat down with Oprah in March, viewers were expecting some shocking reveals, but no one was prepared for just how real the conversation got.

Meghan and Harry described living in an atmosphere of bad vibes where they felt completely unsupported and gaslit. Meghan explained that she reached such a low point that she was worried she would harm herself - and that even then, the royal family’s team refused to get her help. Even today, with that experience far into the rearview, the royal family heartbreakingly continues to deny Meghan and Harry emotional support or validation.

Bad vibes are no joke

While most of us will never experience living in a dysfunctional royal family, there are lessons that everyone can take from the couple’s experience. Bad vibes - distrust, gaslighting, bullying, and negative treatment - can have serious consequences on mental health. All of us recognize the feeling of someone making a painful remark to us without realizing the impact of what they’re saying. Everyone knows how it feels to be mistreated by someone who is supposed to be trustworthy. In situations like that, having a support system is key - and that support does not necessarily need to come from your immediate family. Just like RuPaul says when he talks about having a soul family, you can create your own type of family with the warmest and most supportive people in your life.

Don't Forget: You Matter

If you’re in a situation anything like Meghan’s, please remember: you matter. Your feelings matter, and they are valid. You are so worthy of love and support, and if your family denies that to you, that does not mean there’s anything wrong with you. In fact, quite the opposite.

Keep in mind that you are allowed to set boundaries with anyone you want to. As scary as it can be to first create and enforce those boundaries, they can make all the difference to your mental health. There is no law that says you have to continue a dynamic with someone that hurts you. And if they don’t have enough respect for boundaries to cut it, there is nothing wrong with fully stepping away from a relationship, either temporarily or indefinitely. It does not mean you don’t love the person - it means they cannot give you the love and compassion you need back. And you have every right to love them from afar until they develop the tools to do so.
